Important Update: New Companies House ID Verification Requirements
Important changes have recently been introduced by Companies House regarding mandatory identity verification for directors and others.
You may have already come across this via the media and, although there are some finer details still to be clarified, the basic requirements are in place and the deadline is approaching.
New ID Verification Requirements
With effect from 18th November 2025, Companies House now requires mandatory identity verification for the following individuals:
- Company directors
- Persons with significant control (PSCs)
- Anyone filing information on behalf of a company
This means that individuals involved in managing or owning companies must now provide proof of identity before they can act in their respective roles or submit filings.
What This Means for You
If you are a company director, PSC, or file information with Companies House, you will need to complete an identity verification process that is more rigorous than similar AML ones you may have encountered previously.
Failure to comply with these requirements could result in delays with your filings, restrictions on your ability to act in your role, or penalties. It will not be possible to file documents such as Confirmation Statements online unless your ID has been verified.
ID Verification Options
Companies House has introduced two ways for individuals to complete identity verification:
1. Verify ID Directly with Companies House
You can verify your identity through the Companies House online service which is accessible via:
- A smartphone or computer with a camera
- A valid form of photo ID, such as a passport or driving licence
The system will guide you to upload your documents and possibly complete a facial recognition check. Once verified, your ID status will be recorded and linked to your role(s) across any UK companies.
2. Verify ID Through an Authorised Agent
Alternatively, you can complete the verification process through an Authorised Corporate Service Provider who is registered with Companies House.
Using an authorised agent may be more convenient if:
- You do not wish to use the Companies House platform
- You are already working with an agent for incorporation or filings
- You prefer a more guided process
- You do not wish the Government to directly hold your biometric details, (these remain with the ACSP and do not get sent to Companies House)
- You do not wish to have a Gov One account
The good news should you wish to choose this route is that we are registered with Companies House and, as such, can handle the ID verification process on your behalf using our secure systems and confirm your verified status with Companies House. There is a charge of £40 plus VAT per person for this service.
